Acceleration and Running Speed Development: From Mechanics to Movement

Speed is arguably the most highly prized asset in sport. Understanding the mechanics of acceleration and sprinting is a critical starting point for those seeking to improve speed expression for sport. Sprint training is also a highly potent tool for athletic preparation in general, with multiple applications from performance to mitigating injury risk. With this workshop we explore the components of high speed running, from acceleration to maximum velocity sprinting. Starting from the fundamental mechanics, we explore the critical technical elements to provide the foundation for athletes to ultimately express these qualities within the constraints and context of their sport. During the practical component we will workshop the process of coaching fundamental drills and technical elements.

Dimensions of Developing Explosive Power

Developing the ability to express explosive power during athletic movements is a common goal for those who are training to improve performance. With this workshop we each explore the multiple elements and fundamental physics that underpin the expression of explosive muscular power. We will then turn our attention to the respective speed-strength training modes that allow us to exploit each of the available avenues to take advantage of their additive effects. During the practical that follows we will address the essential technical elements for each of these modalities. We will cover the fundamentals with respect to coaching and delivery, and explore how we can best integrate the respective speed training modes and their progressions within the overall programme.

Future Proofing Female Athletes

Future Proofing Female Athletes

Female athletes in different sports suffer disproportionately more non-contact injuries in comparison to males, and to date the initiatives to address this have failed to make any meaningful impact. With this workshop we get into why females suffer so many more lower limb injuries, what we can do to change these odds, and how we can put them back together after injuries have occurred in a way that protects against further injury upon their return. During the course of this half day event we will blend theory and practical elements to unpack the key findings in this area, and workshop the tools and activities that practitioners can employ to address the issues identified.

Putting the Plan and Program Together: What You’re Not Taught

The ability to tailor a plan to the needs of the individual and devise programs that produce the desired results are critical skills. Sadly, the story book version of planning and periodisation that is presented in textbooks and lectures does not hold up well under real world conditions. What is also generally not taught is how to put a program together – this is something most of us have just had to figure out. With this lecture we go back to first principles and walk through the assumptions versus the reality to arrive at a clearer picture of the task we face with each athlete. We will then present some principles and guide the attendee through the process to take a systematic approach that still accounts for the uncertainty and variability that is inherent when training humans. During the practical that follows we will explore the details that make the difference in delivery, and go through progressions and variations of training modes that will feature in our programs.
